What is Taekwondo?

Literally translated, Taekwondo means "the way of the hand and foot". Taekwondo (also spelled Tae Kwon Do or Taekwon-Do) is the most popular of the Korean martial arts and is the Korean national sport. It is also one of the world's most commonly practiced martial arts. Taekwondo is one of two martial arts (Judo being the other) competed with at the Olympic Games. The actual beginnings of Taekwondo are obscured by time, but many historians believe it originated from a Korean martial arts form known as t'aekyon practiced over 1,300 years ago.
